About Nishant Patel, M.D.

Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?

I chose to specialize in gastroenterology because of the ability to integrate medical knowledge with procedural components for managing acute and chronic illnesses. This field of medicine allows me to provide direct patient care and build rapport with my patients and families, starting at their initial visit. Additionally, there are always new discoveries being made in this specialty (i.e. Hepatitis C medications, therapeutic endoscopic procedures), which makes it an exciting field to be in.

Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?

I especially enjoy taking care of patients with diseases of the bile duct and pancreas. In addition to completing my general training for gastroenterology, I completed an additional year of training specialized in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, which included endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopractreatigram (ERCP). Both of these procedures allow for diagnosis and treatment of complicated conditions such as pancreatic cancer, biliary strictures and bile duct stones.

Where did you study?

Undergrad: Emory University, Medical School: University of Alabama in Birmingham, Internal Medicine Residency: Barnes-Jewish Hospital / Washington University, GI Fellowship: University of Texas Southwestern.

What certifications do you hold?

Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young children. We enjoy traveling and any outdoor activity, including golf and running.

Do you have any special honors or recognitions in your medical career that you would like to share?

I am a contributing author to textbooks in the field of gastroenterology (i.e. The Washington Manual of Gastroenterology). I have also authored research articles published in multiple medical journals and given presentations at national conventions on topics ranging from liver cancer to advanced procedures.

Do you fluently speak any other languages in addition to English?

Gujurati.

Please list your professional affiliations.

American Medical Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.

Dr. Patel and his staff have an old soul approach to the craft of healing paired with patient communication technology that maintains a high level transparency and patient reminders. Dr. Patel invests in understanding patient history and their life style to bend his approach that fits each patient. Staff is very loyal and happy, which shows well in patient care.

My discussion with Dr. Patel was very helpful to me. I appreciated his time and the thoroughness of his explanations to my questions. When I met with someone in the office who would schedule my colonoscopy, I was disappointed that I was not given more complete information about the process required when I had to get approval from my cardiologist first. I understand the reason my cardiologist’s approval is required because of Dr. Patel’s explanation. I think the scheduler may have assumed I knew more than I did. As a newer patient and someone new to heart disease, I was guessing about “next steps” and I was mistaken. In the end, I’m now clear on what will happen so it’s not a huge issue. I feel it’s more efficient and less trouble for the patient and office staff if processes outside of the usual are clearly explained to the patient.

The best thing that could have happened to me is to find a doctor who understood my symptoms from day one and has treated me for more than a year. I feel very good following the treatment. Thank you, Dr. Nishant.
