The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method is a nonsurgical, medically designed treatment protocol that assists patients with losing weight while maintaining muscle mass. Developed by Dr. Tran Tien Chanh in France more than 20 years ago, Ideal Protein is a ketogenic diet and weight loss plan. It is a diet that makes the body enter into a process called ketosis, where fats, instead of carbohydrates, are burned to be utilized for energy. The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method is a 4-Phase method that promotes the stabilization of pancreas and blood sugar levels while burning fat and maintaining muscle and other lean tissue. To learn more about this weight-loss method, schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist at GI Alliance.
Please note that the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method is only offered in some of our Houston-area locations.
What does it mean to be obese in today's society?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers obesity to be a leading health concern among the general public. According to CDC research, “in 2009-2010, more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) were obese.” These studies have also indicated that people who are obese have a greater chance of experiencing the following conditions:
- Cancers (colon, endometrial, and breast)
- Coronary heart disease
- Dyslipidemia
- Gynecological conditions (infertility, abnormal menstruation)
- High blood pressure
- Gallbladder and liver issues
- Osteoarthritis
- Type II diabetes
Individuals who are obese also exhibit a higher-than-normal rate of respiratory diseases. The CDC studies also predict that one out of every three people born today will develop diabetes during the course of their lives. Research conducted in 2012 reveals that “obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States – triple the rate from just one generation ago.”
The U.S. is one of the wealthiest countries in the world with the greatest obesity rate per capita and some of the highest healthcare costs per person. Contributing factors to this state include increased consumption of nutrient-poor, more energy-dense foods containing high levels of saturated fats and sugar combined with less physical activity and increased amounts of stress, causing the World Health Organization to label it an obesity epidemic. Obesity, however, is a preventable condition.

What can I expect with nonsurgical weight loss?
Part of this treatment process is learning to live off of the body’s own fat reserves. The body gets energy from glycogen (carbohydrate), fats, and protein reserves.
It gets energy first from simple and complex carbohydrate reserves. Once those reserves have been depleted, the body turns simultaneously to protein and fat reserves for energy. An individual who does not need to lose weight typically has around 1 – 2% of their body’s reserves from carbohydrates, around 19% from muscle mass, and 79% from fat.
Simple and complex carbohydrates can be a roadblock to weight loss. The body stores about three days' worth of carbohydrates. Until a person's total weight loss goal is achieved, the weight loss plan restricts the consumption of carbohydrates (simple and complex). Whenever sugar is consumed, the body is not burning fat. It is important to keep in mind that the initial source of energy comes from glycogen (carbohydrate) reserves. The primary principle is to deplete the glycogen (carbohydrate) reserves completely to encourage the body to use its fat reserve to burn calories.
The question becomes how to encourage the body to burn its fat reserves and encourage muscle mass maintenance when both are simultaneously depleted. This can be accomplished by first feeding the body with foods that have a high protein value, contain eight essential amino acids, and are 97% absorbable, which renders them biologically complete proteins. Second, we supplement the diet with nutrient-rich supplements such as Natura Multi-Vita, Omega-3 Plus and Potassium, and Natura Calcium and Magnesium, (all essential ingredients in muscle building) and electrolytes to replace those typically found in foods while restricted on the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method.
