Luminal stent placement refers to the insertion of a stent into the internal gastrointestinal (GI) tract. “Luminal” refers to an open space or cavity of a tubular organ, such as the intestine or esophagus. A stent is a tubular support that sits in a passageway of the digestive system. The stent opens up a pathway or portion of the GI tract that is at higher risk of closing up, or that is already causing complications due to blockage and/or narrowing. Stent placement has become an increasingly used method for the treatment of blockage caused by any growths or narrowing in the GI tract. If you have questions about luminal stent placement or would like to know if this procedure could be of benefit to you, contact GI Alliance.

As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with stent placement into the GI tract. Some of the risks associated with luminal stent placement include reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, dislodging of the stent, and nausea. You should discuss any concerns you have with your doctor. If you would like to learn additional information about the risks and benefits of the luminal stent, please contact your local GI Alliance.

Some of the common steps taken before a luminal stent placement procedure are fasting on the day of the surgery, and possibly earlier than that. Additionally, you may be asked to stop taking some medications that could potentially cause a risk during your procedure. You should also arrange transportation for yourself from the location of the procedure, as you will be sedated and unable to drive yourself. It is important to speak with your doctor about what specific steps you should take to prepare for your luminal stent placement procedure. During the luminal stent placement procedure, the patient will be sedated. The doctor will insert an endoscope into the esophagus to examine the obstruction. A balloon will then be inflated at the location of the insertion to open up the blocked or narrowed area, and the stent is placed in the opening. If you have additional questions about the procedure process, be sure to consult your GI Alliance physician.

My Doctor retired. My new primary care doctor recommended Dr. Chuang. He did not disappoint! Oh my, so easy to talk to. He had several recommendations for me and even pulled up information on the computer to show me where to go for more detail. On my follow up visit, he went above and beyond explaining my issues. He even solved another issue that wasn’t related to his specialty. Highly recommend him! He is a treasure!

The parking is easy, office is small, the elevator is small, but the med tech is efficient and took my complicated history quickly without me having to spell words for her. Dr. Brenner listened attentively and asked pertinent questions prior to exam. She examined me thoroughly and developed a plan for my throat pain that had been ongoing since 2005 despite surgery. Dr. Brenner is smart. Her assistant scheduled me for a scope the following week, told me what she would do afterward based on the findings. I finally have hope.
