Luminal stent placement refers to the insertion of a stent into the internal gastrointestinal (GI) tract. “Luminal” refers to an open space or cavity of a tubular organ, such as the intestine or esophagus. As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with stent placement into the GI tract. What happens before and during the luminal stent placement procedure?
Some of the common steps taken before a luminal stent placement procedure are fasting on the day of the surgery, and possibly earlier than that. Additionally, you may be asked to stop taking some medications that could potentially cause a risk during your procedure. You should also arrange transportation for yourself from the location of the procedure, as you will be sedated and unable to drive yourself. It is important to speak with your doctor about what specific steps you should take to prepare for your luminal stent placement procedure. During the luminal stent placement procedure, the patient will be sedated. The doctor will insert an endoscope into the esophagus to examine the obstruction. A balloon will then be inflated at the location of the insertion to open up the blocked or narrowed area, and the stent is placed in the opening.
