About Richard L. Otero, M.D.
About
Richard Otero, M.D. followed in the footsteps of his father, pursuing a career in medicine and quickly reaching high points early in his career, including Chief of Staff and Chief of the GI Division at Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. While these achievements brought him great satisfaction, he believed the true rewards come from his patients. He says, “I consider it an honor that each patient trusts me with their care. I want to do everything I can to be proactive in their care, but I also want to give them the knowledge and tools to be proactive themselves.
Before he began his pursuit of a career in medicine, Dr. Otero completed his undergraduate work at Harvard College. He then went on to obtain his Medical Doctorate at Southwestern Medical School and completed his internship and residency at the University of Texas Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, Texas. He went on to accept a Fellowship in Gastroenterology there as well.
When you ask why he chose gastroenterology, Dr. Otero describes the diversity that comes with the field, stating, “it gives me the opportunity to work with patients while performing procedures—it is both mentally and physically challenging every day.” When he finds time for himself, he enjoys traveling around the globe. His trips have taken him to far and exotic locales, including Turkey, Italy, Thailand, and Bali.

Reviews
I had a friend, Ron Miller, whom was Dr Oteros first patient. Otero was amongst the best Drs in the City like; Tippet, Franklin, Wu and others whom started their practices on the Southside. Dr Otero is the best dressed Dr, always in a suit, and full of charisma, manners and compassion. Other Drs could learn manners from this one Dr. He actually saved me twice. Sent me to Franklin and then Buckley for surgery on my esophagus stomach and hiatal hernia. Sent me to Natl Jewish Health in Denver, for my lungs in 2018. He truly sets the GOLD standard for all Drs. His upbringing by his parents from Mexico, made him into the loving, caring, professional Dr he is TODAY! Above all, he believes in Jesus.
I had a pleasant experience at SAGA. The staff put me totally at ease, removing any anxiety or concerns. Everyone from the check in staff at the front office, the amazing staff in pre-op that ensured my comfort with warm Snuggie blankets, the class act team in the procedure room. The anesthesiologist explained exactly what to expect, and Dr. Otero is so personable and professional as always. The post-op team was attentive and very nice. I had 2 procedures in a 2 week span. I honestly left there feeling like a family member. I highly recommend Dr. Otero’s and SAGA.
I've been a patient of Dr. Otero and the SAGA team for many years. I have found them to be courteous, understanding, and helpful before, during, and post-procedure.
Best doctor Dr. Otero and his staff. I will forever be how patient.
Very efficient and asked questions to make sure everything was correct. Made me comfortable all the way.
