About J. Ryan Cunningham, M.D.
Dr. J. Ryan Cunningham was born and raised in Dalhart, Texas and received his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio and his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Upon completion of his medical studies, he returned as a faculty member to the combined Army/Air Force GI fellowship program in San Antonio at SAMMC and Wilford Hall where he has been a key clinical faculty member since 2010.
Dr. Cunningham was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by his grandfather, a general practitioner in his hometown of Dalhart. As a young boy, he spent many hours at his medical office and saw firsthand the good work he did for the community on a daily basis. He knew from a very young age that he wanted to follow in his footsteps.
Dr. Cunningham is skilled in all areas of gastroenterology with special interest and training in the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal diseases. He was the first physician in San Antonio to provide treatment for GERD with the Stretta procedure. He is also highly experienced in esophageal manometry, impedance, and wireless pH testing having co-developed a fellowship curriculum for esophageal diseases and diagnostic evaluation. His other GI interests include upper and lower endoscopy, the evaluation and treatment of IBD (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis), colorectal cancer screening and small bowel capsule endoscopy. Dr. Cunningham looks forward to establishing himself as a compassionate and caring gastroenterologist in the San Antonio community. He and his wife are the proud parents of two active young boys. When not practicing medicine, Dr. Cunningham enjoys coaching his boys’ sports teams and traveling with his family.
“Gastroenterology offers a unique ability to immediately impact patients’ lives in a positive manner through endoscopic procedures. I love having the ability to assess a patient’s complaint with endoscopic evaluations and provide instant feedback on their condition.” – J. Ryan Cunningham, MD

Reviews
Ryan Cunningham had done my colonoscopy 6 years ago. Now I'm back for a probably non-cancerous spot on my pancreas. We had a good conversation. Offices and staff were very nice.
The receptionist was very personable and helped me establish an account online. Dr. Cunningham provided clear answers to my questions.
Dr. Cunningham is an excellent doctor. He listens very well, he gets you the information you need. You just get the best care.
Dr. Cunningham and his staff are amazing!
Coming from someone who has had more than her fair share of doctors, Dr. Cunningham is by far one of the best! I was coming from South La. and needed a new gastro Dr. I have suffered with severe UC and have had essentially everything removed. I was lucky enough to have a jpouch after my ostomy was reversed, but was in the middle of a flare up when I was looking for a new Dr. I chose Dr. Cunningham because he had good reviews and was close to home. I was not disappointed. He spent as much time as I needed him to in order to go over my entire file. He took notes, asked questions, and was legitimately interested in me and my case. He was able to prescribe me some meds to get my flare up under control, but what he did next really sealed the deal for me. When I was in La. I was told that I needed to have a "maintenance" scope done yearly in order to make sure my pouch was operating correctly. During my appointment with Dr. Cunningham, I asked him when he would like to schedule my scope. He looked at me puzzled and asked what scope? I said my yearly scope. He said, I don't know what you have been told in the past, or why those doctors felt that need, but you do not have to have a scope done every year. In fact, unless you are having issues, there is no reason to scope the jpouch. I was shocked! This doctor could have easily taken my ignorance, and made a lot of money, he didn't! He told the truth because it's what's best for the patient! I cannot recommend Dr. Cunningham enough. I am truly grateful I became his patient.
