About R. Brooks Vance Jr., M.D.
Dr. Vance joined GI Associates in the summer of 2017 and is the Director of Advanced and Therapeutic Endoscopy for the group. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English and Psychology, Summa Cum Laude, at the University of Mississippi, Sally McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College, during which time he was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and received the Taylor Medal, the highest academic honor in the School of Liberal Arts. He then completed medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine where he received the AOA Student Research Award. During medical school, he also volunteered and served on the student board of directors for the Jackson Free Clinic.
Dr. Vance completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC, where he was selected as WakeMed Resident of the year and received the Robert L. Ney Award, “which recognizes a senior resident with a commitment to academic excellence, a compassionate approach to patients, and, most of all, an inspirational effect on others.” He then completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, where he was selected as Chief Fellow, and earned the Distinguished Fellow Research Award at the end of his three years.
Dr. Vance then finished a subsequent, year long Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, one of the higher volume therapeutic endoscopy centers in the country. During that year, Dr. Vance was trained in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound, complex endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, diagnostic and therapeutic cholangioscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection for large polyps of the colon or upper GI tract, band endoscopic mucosal resection for nodular Barrett’s esophagus, radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation for flat Barrett’s, and luminal stents for both benign and malignant disease.
Dr. Vance provides advanced and therapeutic endoscopic services at most hospitals in the area and performed Mississippi’s first endoscopic pancreatic necrosectomy after placement of a lumen apposing covered metal stent. Dr. Vance is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
Dr. Vance is thrilled to be back in his hometown with his wife, Rebecca, and his three young children.
Dr. Vance is affiliated with most major hospitals in the area.
