About John Cluley, M.D.
Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?
The gut is fascinating to me. While I like to keep the gut healthy, the pathology and the diversity of gastrointestinal diseases always keeps me thinking and interested. I also like that everyone can relate to having a GI issue at some point in their life, which makes our specialty very relevant and important.
Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?
I believe food is the greatest medicine, so I am particularly interested in nutrition. The evolving study of the gut microbiome and its effect on our overall health is also one of my areas of interest.
Where did you study?
Medical School: University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Internal Medicine Residency: Northwestern University, Gastroenterology & Hepatology Fellowship: University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
What certifications do you hold?
I am board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology.
What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy doing Crossfit, cooking and eating healthy whole foods, and traveling. We have a Goldendoodle puppy named Halsted (aka “Steddy”) who makes us smile and laugh every day.
Do you have any special honors or recognitions in your medical career that you would like to share?
In medical school I was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society by graduating in the top ten percent of my program. In residency, I earned the Landsberg Award as the most outstanding resident in our graduating class. In fellowship, I was chosen as Chief Fellow for our fellowship program.
Do you fluently speak any other languages in addition to English?
I was a Spanish major in college and continue to speak it proficiently.
Please list your professional affiliations.
I am a member of American Gastroenterological Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Texas Society for Gastroenterology & Endoscopy.
