Exercising in the summertime can pose certain health risks such as dehydration and sunstroke if you are not careful. Here are some exercise tips to be beat the summer heat:
- Drink plenty of water. Staying well hydrated while working out during the summer should be a high priority. It will prevent symptoms such as dizziness, muscle cramps, and headaches.
- Use clothes made of wicking material. These clothes are lightweight, breathable, and tend to pull moisture away from your skin. This helps you stay relatively cooler when working out.
- Try to avoid direct sunlight. Choose trails that offer a lot of shade to protect yourself from exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. Don’t forget to wear a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF when going outside even in cloudy weather.
- Try split routines. If you find yourself getting tired quickly due to the heat, try splitting up your workout. For example, you can split a 30-minute workout into two 15-minute sessions, once in the morning and once in the evening.
- Train with less intensity. Hot weather may not be the best time to really push yourself. Slow down you pace or take frequent breaks during your workout to avoid overheating.
- Change your workouts to fit the climate. If it is very hot, it might be a good idea to try water aerobics instead of regular aerobics. The water will keep you cool while also providing resistance training. If running is what you like to do for exercise, an indoor treadmill can be a good substitute for jogging in the great outdoors.
